Industrial and quarrying landscapes are often viewed as ecologically depleted spaces. Breedon recognised, however, while our operations inevitably shape the natural environment, they also create significant opportunities to deliver measurable biodiversity enhancement both on our sites and in the communities in which we operate.
To realise this potential, we introduced our first Biodiversity Week in 2023.
The programme aimed to showcase how operational sites are supporting nature’s recovery while empowering colleagues across the business to take an active role in protecting and restoring ecosystems on their own sites and within their local communities.
Our Biodiversity Week 2025 was the largest and most impactful to date. Delivered as a company-wide initiative, spanning GB, Ireland and the USA, it was structured around five core themes — Wildlife, Environment, Education, Community, and Doing Our Bit — enabling each site to design activities that reflected its local habitats, priority species, and community partnerships.
Throughout the week, teams across the business delivered a wide range of biodiversity-enhancing actions, including the creation of wildflower meadows and pollinator planting, the installation of bird, bat, and insect boxes, guided nature walks and ecological learning sessions, school engagement activities, volunteering and citizen science projects.
Supported by our sustainability team and delivered in partnership with wildlife trusts, ecologists, local authorities, and community organisations, the week engaged more than 1,000 participants and demonstrated the collective impact of coordinated action
Biodiversity Week 2025 delivered lasting environmental, social, and organisational benefits which we intend to build upon further in the years to follow.
