Get in touch about Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)

Product Overview

Our Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is a range of asphalt products specifically engineered to be produced at significantly lower temperatures than traditional hot mix asphalt.

While conventional hot mix asphalt is typically manufactured at temperatures between 150°C and 200°C (depending on bitumen grade), Breedon WMA incorporates specialist additives that enable production and laying at temperatures approximately 30–40°C lower. All our Warm Mix Asphalt products are supplied in accordance with Clause 908 of the Specification for Highway Works (SHW 908 WMA).

Lower production temperatures result in reduced hydrocarbon consumption and lower emissions, without compromising the performance or durability of the asphalt when compared to conventional hot mix.

Why use Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)

Energy efficient
WMA is mixed at a significantly lower temperature which reduces fuel and energy consumption.

Reduced environmental impact
The reduction in temperature produces fewer greenhouse gases during the mixing and laying processes.

Lay in cooler weather
WMA can be laid in cooler weather meaning the asphalt laying window can be extended.

Increased workability
Breedon WMA offers improved compaction, even if after longer travel times.

Applications

  • Trunk Roads - high durability offered for high traffic areas.
  • Private Roads - good compaction in cooler conditions or remote areas.
  • Housing Developments - reduced temperature allows for quicker access for residents.
  • Parking Areas - reduced temperature allows for quicker site reopening.
  • Airfields - improved compaction in varying weather conditions.
  • Farmyards - reduced odour and emissions during laying.
  • Industrial Units - ideal for both hand and machine lay.
