Stone Mastic Asphalt

When combined the end product is a gap graded mixture that derives strength from the coarse aggregate skeleton that is filled with the mortar of fine aggregate, filler and binder. SMA is manufactured in accordance with EN 13108-5. SMA manufactured with Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) provides a durable, long lasting material even in high stress areas. SMA manufactured with paving grade binder and cellulose fibres is suitable in lower stress areas.

SMA provides a smooth appearance as the texture produced by SMA is negative i.e. below the surface. As well as being a highly durable material, SMA produces exceptional resistance to permanent deformation (wheel track rutting) due to the aggregate skeleton and polymer modified binder used in the design. The negative texture of SMA reduces tyre noise so is beneficial in sound reduction when compared with other Surface course materials.
