Product Overview

Railway aggregates and ballast are specialist materials used in the construction, maintenance and upgrading of railway tracks. They are typically made from high grade crushed materials such a granite or basalt play a critical role in forming the ‘track ballast’ layer – the foundation upon which sleepers and track is laid.

The primary function of these aggregates is to provide a strong and stable support structure for the track whilst offering drainage and load distribution. Our aggregates help evenly distribute the load from passing trains evenly which prevents excessive settlement. They offer vital resistance against track movement and allow water to filter and drain away, improving safety and helping to delay track deterioration.

We are able to provide railway ballast to meet the required specifications produced in accordance with BS EN 13450 Aggregates for Railway Ballast.

Why Use Breedon Rail Aggregates

Holds the track in place
Keeps the rails and sleepers steady when trains pass.

Spreads the load
Helps distribute the weight of trains to the ground.

Improves drainage
Lets rainwater flow away, preventing water build up.

Reduces weeds
Keeps vegetation from growing around the track.

Absorbs vibrations
Reduces movement and wear from passing trains.

Applications

  • Railway maintenance - Used as truck ballast, shoulder and sub-ballast material, as well as for spot re-ballasting and drainage improvements.
  • Railway upgrades - Used to improve existing rail system.
  • Railway construction - Our aggregates can be used in the building of new rail lines, terminals, sidings and freight yards.

Key Benefits

Even load distribution

Improved track stability

Improved drainage

Enhanced durability

Reduced maintenance

FAQs

It is a layer of crushed rock which is used around and beneath railway sleepers. This material provides stability and support to the tracks structure which ensures safe train movements.

Ballast helps distribute the loads caused by train loads, and maintains the alignment of the track which helps keeps the trains safe. It allows for water drainage too. Ballast plays a critical role in prolonging the lifespan of our railway network.

There are stringent requirements for railway ballast, and materials are selected and specified based on their strength and resistance to weathering. We can produce materials which hit the criteria detailed in BS EN 13450 Aggregates for Railway Ballast.
