Product Overview

Our Breedon Gravicrete® range has been developed to give specifiers and contractors the option of two advanced concrete formulations, ensuring the right mix is available for every project’s specific technical requirement.

Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight is produced using carefully selected low-density aggregates such as expanded clay or pumice. This creates a reduced‑weight concrete that maintains essential compressive strength while lowering the overall load on structural elements, making it ideal for refurbishments, multi‑storey buildings or any application where weight is a critical factor.

For projects that require increased mass, protection or stability, Breedon Gravicrete® Heavyweight provides a robust alternative. Using heavyweight aggregates including barytes, magnetite or steel punching’s, this formulation delivers significantly greater density, making it well suited to radiation shielding, industrial ballast, vibration dampening and other specialist environments where enhanced protective performance is essential.

FAQs

Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight Concrete:

Lightweight structural concrete, such as Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight, is often used when you need to reduce the overall weight on a building or structure. Its lower density means it places less load on foundations, floors and supporting structure. This is especially important in high-rise buildings, bridges, and precast elements where weight savings can lower foundation and structural support requirements.

Lightweight concrete typically provides enhanced thermal insulation to contribute towards better energy efficiency. It is also easier to handle and can be quicker to install in some situations, reducing labour and overall construction time.

No. Despite being lighter, Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight is designed to meet structural strength requirements. It provides a balance of reduced weight and adequate load-bearing capacity for many construction applications.

To check if Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight is suitable for your project please contact the team who will be happy to assist.

Breedon Gravicrete® Lightweight uses porous aggregates, like expanded clay, to deliver better thermal insulation compared to standard concrete. This can contribute towards improved energy efficiency and reduced heating and cooling costs.

Breedon Gravicrete® Heavyweight Concrete:

Heavyweight concrete, such as Breedon Gravicrete® Heavyweight, has a much higher density, typically over 3,200 kg/m³, due to the use of heavy aggregates like barite or magnetite.

Due to its density it allows for thinner walls to be constructed whilst offering enhanced protection for gamma and X-ray shielding as well as allowing for a lower volume of concrete for ballast to achieve the same weight structure.

Breedon Gravicrete® Heavyweight can be used in nuclear power plants, medical radiation therapy rooms, laboratories, and military structures where radiation shielding is essential. It can also be used for counterweights in bridges, cranes, and offshore structures.

Breedon Gravicrete® Heavyweight absorbs and attenuates radiation more effectively than standard concrete, helping to protect people and equipment by reducing exposure to harmful gamma rays and neutrons in nuclear or medical facilities.
