Standard Concrete Mixes

Standard Prescribed Concrete mixes are where the mix proportions are prescribed and comply with a British Standard table, rather than being based on test data or mix design.

They are suitable for general construction where the exact mix is not critical, and the concrete is not reinforced or used in structural elements.

Nominal concrete mixes are produced where proportions of cement, sand, and aggregates are fixed based on past experience or established guidelines, rather than being calculated based on performance like strength or durability

Used in informal or small-scale construction, with some mix examples as follows:

• 1:2:4 - Standard Nominal Mix
• 1:3:6 - Non structural use
• 1:4:8 - Lean concrete / Blinding

Nominal Proportions based on BS 8500-1:2023

Nominal proportions are expressed as parts by volume. The “part” can be any measure of volume (for example, a bucket or shovel), as long as the same measure is used for all materials.

A prescribed concrete mix is a type of concrete where the exact mix proportions (cement, water, aggregates, admixtures) are specified in advance, rather than being designed to meet a specific performance requirement (like strength or durability)
