Breedon, an essential construction materials provider, partnered with the local community in Edlington, Doncaster, to deliver a long-awaited pedestrian crossing outside Hill Top Academy. The project aimed to improve road safety for pupils, parents, staff, and residents accessing Hill Top Community Centre and Hill Top Academy along the busy Edlington Lane.
For several years, local residents and parents had campaigned for a safe crossing point on Edlington Lane, a busy main road posing daily risks to children and vulnerable adults. Despite strong community support and ongoing concerns raised with local representatives, the project stalled due to a lack of available funding. Without external support, the much-needed safety improvement could not move forward.
Recognising both the need and its role as a Good Neighbour, Breedon stepped in to fully support the project. The company funded the design and installation of the crossing and donated 188 tonnes of asphalt, including 170 tonnes of high-performance stone mastic asphalt (SMA) to provide enhanced skid resistance and improved safety.
Breedon also covered all associated costs, including survey work, consent applications, and legal agreements, working closely with the local community and stakeholders throughout the process. ECB Design Group Ltd delivered the design and project management services, while Thomas Bow carried out the installation works to a high standard.
The project was completed successfully on Edlington Lane, reflecting Breedon’s Good Neighbour Policy and its ongoing commitment to making a positive difference in the communities surrounding its quarry sites.
The new pedestrian crossing has had an immediate and positive impact on the safety and wellbeing of the school and wider community. Parents, pupils, staff, and the school’s crossing patrol report feeling significantly safer during peak drop-off and pick-up times. The crossing also improves access for users of Hill Top Community Centre, supporting children and vulnerable adults.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project has strengthened relationships between Breedon’s Holme Hall Quarry and the Edlington community. Building on this momentum, Breedon is now working with Helping Hands Community Centre and local councillors to deliver educational outreach programmes with nearby schools, including Hill Top Primary Academy, helping to inspire future generations and showcase career opportunities within the construction sector.
