Digital poverty continues to affect millions across the UK, limiting access to education, employment opportunities and essential services. Around one in seven adults and one in five children experience some level of digital exclusion. These gaps create significant barriers to social mobility and economic participation, with significant social and economic benefits possible from bridging this divide.
Across Breedon, a large number of digital devices, including laptops and screens, were scheduled for upgrade as part of ongoing technology improvements. The BTS team recognised an opportunity to extend the life of these assets for social good and were keen to identify a trusted, community-based charity that could securely refurbish and redistribute the equipment to individuals, families and groups experiencing digital exclusion.
Working closely with the Group Social Impact Manager, the BTS team selected PCrefurb, a digital inclusion charity operating across Derbyshire and Tameside. Almost entirely grant-funded, PCrefurb supports individuals through referrals from more than 90 organisations, including local councils, employment services, charities, NHS teams, social prescribing services, housing associations, domestic refuges, rehabilitation services and probation services.
PCrefurb securely wipes, refurbishes and redistributes donated devices, with every item fully tracked to ensure transparency and measurable impact. In addition, the charity provides valuable work-experience opportunities for local people, supporting skills development through the device wiping and re-setting process. This partnership ensured Breedon’s surplus technology delivered meaningful, measurable benefits to those most in need.
In 2025, Breedon has donated 99 laptops and 69 screens to PCrefurb. The devices have already started to make an impact with 20 laptops donated to a youth support group in Derbyshire, several donated to individuals in supported/temporary accommodation to enable them to access training and employment opportunities, as well as further devices donated to Chesterfield Cosy Hub and Elastic FM, a community group that provides digital skills and support to a range of local groups.
Following on from the success of the PCrefurb initiative, further laptops have also been donated to Kingussie High School in the Cairngorms National Park and to Getting Oxfordshire Online.
We are immensely grateful to everyone at Breedon involved in making this generous donation of laptops and monitors. It has enabled us to swiftly respond to requests for help both for individuals and groups in need in our communities. Thanks to the team at Breedon for allowing PCrefurb to refurbish and redistribute this equipment, both the social and environmental impact is already hugely significant.
