Food bank demand has surged dramatically in recent years, with charities across the UK reporting record levels of need. The cost-of-living crisis has pushed millions into hardship: more than five million people regularly skip meals, and almost one in four children now live in poverty. As household budgets are stretched further, more individuals and families are turning to food banks for essential support, placing unprecedented pressure on already-limited resources.
Coalville Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust network, supports people in crisis through referrals from over 50 agencies across Leicestershire. With demand continuing to rise, the foodbank relies heavily on committed volunteers. To maintain reliable service and meet growing need, it ideally needs volunteers who can provide consistent support.
Our RMX Business Manager for the Midlands, Seb O’Shea, partnered with the foodbank to create a structured volunteer rota that delivered consistent, long-term support. Breedon committed to providing a volunteer every Tuesday and Friday over a six-month period, ensuring the charity had reliable assistance it could depend on. During December, one of their busiest times, two volunteers attended each slot.
During their shifts, volunteers carried out essential tasks including sorting and managing food deliveries, packing food parcels, and organising the food warehouse. This support helped the foodbank operate more efficiently and continue providing vital assistance to people in the local community.
This regular commitment enabled the foodbank to plan its operations more effectively, aligning volunteer support with peak activity times. The structured approach also made it easier for employees to get involved, resulting in 26 Breedon volunteers supporting the foodbank over the six months.
