Restoring a lost link to Staffordshire's history
The Stafford Riverway Link project was launched to re-establish a long-lost link between Stafford town and the UK’s waterway network.
It is a volunteer project undertaken by the Stafford Riverway Link Community Interest Company (SRL CIC) and has received a contribution of 39,000kg of Breedon Cement towards the cause.
As a result, the link will be able to improve access to Stafford, boost the town’s tourism and economy and provide pleasure boaters, walkers, cyclists and tourists with new areas to explore safely.
The delivery of cement to the new construction site will advance the launch of this new link by several years.
Challenges
Major construction and landscaping work is required to complete the connection between the new basin at Stafford to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
To re-establish the Stafford Riverway Link, the site must first be excavated and construction on the river basin must be completed. A roving bridge and accompanying tow path are required at the junction, with adequate access to local farms.
From the basin a new lock is required, from which a navigable channel must feed into the River Penk and River Sow.
The plan
The link must be permanently re-established this time around, to allow local tourism and business to make the most of the revived connection between Stafford and the wider UK waterway network.
The basin, the lock and its access routes must be constructed from durable materials that can safely support the emerging biodiversity that will occupy this new space in the years to come.
Taking action
Breedon supplied 39,000kg of General Purpose Cement in 25kg bags, over two deliveries to help move the project forward. Breedon CEM II A/L allows for a quick and easy setting process for the team of volunteers, with a fast-curing time to minimise delay or disruption.
Its high impact resistance and ultra-low permeability will support high volumes of water and fast-moving currents.
The results
The new and improved waterway will provide a boost to local habitats and provide a long-term environmental benefit to the growing biodiversity that this new structure allows.
For the safety and enjoyment of local communities, the basin and lock, reinforced by Breedon cement, will offer greater stability of water levels, unobstructed river channels and long-term flood relief.
We are bringing the environment with us. Not just ticking the boxes, but actually making a contribution to the whole of the River Sow valley.
Breedon helped us a lot with the cement, which will enable us to complete this space in the next 2 to 3 years, which was probably going to take us ten.
