Product Overview

Secondary and recycled aggregates are sustainable construction materials produced through waste materials, or with industry by-products. These materials include crushed concrete, recycled asphalt, brick and by-products such as filler. As part of our focus on the circular economy and providing sustainable customer solutions, we can offer a range of aggregates from recycled and secondary sources.

As demand for more sustainable construction grows, aggregates from secondary or recycled sources are playing an increasingly large and important role in construction projects.

We recognise that preserving our mineral reserves is vital to our environmental commitments. Whilst it helps extend the lifespan of our mineral resources, it also diverts waste from landfill and helps lower the carbon footprint of construction projects.

Our secondary and recycled products are subject to rigorous processing and testing to ensure they might the relevant specifications and exacting quality control needed.

Why Use Breedon Secondary & Recycled Aggregates

Preserve virgin aggregates
By reducing the use of virgin aggregates we're supporting resource efficiency.

Reduced project costs
Our Secondary & Recycled aggregates can provide a more cost-effective aolution to primary aggregates.

Meet carbon reduction targets
Reducing landfill and helps to reduce overall carbon footprint of materials.

Compliant with British standards
Thorough testing means that our products meet all regulatory standards.

Applications

Our secondary and recycled aggregates can be used in a wide range of common applications, including:

  • Road subbase - Suitable for use within sub-bases (allowances detailed in MCHW works) to provide a stable foundation.
  • Concrete production - They can be used within concrete to replace a percentage of virgin aggregate to lower environmental impact without sacrificing strength.
  • Landscaping - Offering a lower cost and more sustainable option.
  • Utility trench backfill - Used to provide a protective bedding and backfill which meets engineering standards.
  • Drainage layers - Effective for drainage applications due to their well graded properties and permeability.

FAQs

Recycled and secondary aggregates are alternative construction materials which can be used as substitutes of virgin aggregates. They are commonly used in construction for resource and cost saving reasons, especially when focussing on sustainable and circular economy practices.

The main difference between the two is predominantly their source and how they are produced. Recycled aggregates are made by processing construction and demolition waste such as old concrete, bricks or asphalt, whereas secondary aggregates are by-products of industrial processes, and not originally intended to be used as aggregates but can be used as part of the wider material creation. This may include things such as blast furnace slag or incinerator bottom ash.

Recycled and secondary aggregates can be good alternatives to primary aggregates but their performance and suitability depend on the application they are looking to be used in. For example, in road base and subbase, performance is often equal to that of primary aggregates.
