Building connections through Breedon's Adopt-a-School model

St Hardulph's Primary School: Building connections through Breedon's Adopt-a-School model

As part of Breedon's commitment to creating positive social impact in the communities where it operates, colleagues at Pinnacle House have developed a strong and ongoing relationship with St Hardulph's C of E Primary School, located in Breedon-on-the-Hill. Through Breedon's Adopt-a-School approach, the partnership has combined education, safety, environmental awareness and community support to provide meaningful learning experiences for pupils while strengthening links between the business and its local community.

Challenge

Children living in rural communities often have limited opportunities to engage directly with local industries and employers. This matters because career awareness starts early: by age 7, 82% of children already have an occupational aspiration, and career ideas can begin to narrow from around age 6–7. Schools also benefit from additional support to enhance learning, promote safety awareness and access resources that enrich the educational experience.

St Hardulph's sought to provide pupils with real-world careers awareness and learning opportunities while helping them better understand the local environment, road safety and their role within the community.

Solution

Using the Adopt-a-School model as a framework for sustained engagement, Breedon delivered a range of activities that connected classroom learning with real-world experiences:

  • Hosted pupils on educational visits to Breedon and Cloud Hill Quarries, helping children learn about geology, rock types and the role quarrying plays in their local area.
  • Embedded careers awareness into engagement activities by introducing pupils to the people, skills and job roles involved in quarrying, construction materials, transport and sustainability.
  • Delivered road safety education sessions and vehicle-awareness activities, including opportunities for pupils to explore a concrete mixer and learn about safe behaviour around large vehicles.
  • Supported environmental initiatives through the donation of litter-picking equipment following a request from a pupil.
  • Sponsored new school sports kits, helping the school replace ageing equipment and enabling pupils to represent their school with pride.
  • Strengthened community connections through regular interactions between pupils and colleagues, including school competitions, prize presentations and acts of kindness visits to Pinnacle House.
  • Enabled colleagues to share their skills and passions beyond work, including designing an outdoor classroom from unused ground with a colleague using her gardening knowledge to help select plants and teach pupils about herbs and the natural environment.

Impact

The partnership demonstrates how long-term engagement can create value for both schools and local communities. Through a combination of educational visits, safety awareness programmes, environmental initiatives and practical support, Breedon has helped St Hardulph's pupils develop a greater understanding of the world of work, local industry and community responsibility.

By introducing careers awareness at primary school age, the programme helps broaden pupils' understanding of the roles, skills and pathways connected to quarrying, construction materials, transport and sustainability before career ideas begin to narrow. The relationship has also strengthened connections between Breedon colleagues and the local community, creating a sustained programme of engagement rather than a series of one-off activities.

The programme has also created meaningful volunteering opportunities for colleagues, enabling them to use their personal skills and interests to support children’s learning. This has generated a strong sense of satisfaction among employees, showing how colleagues can add value in settings beyond the workplace while making a visible difference to the school environment.

Adopt-a-School outcomes

  • Increased exposure to local careers and industry.
  • Improved understanding of road safety and safe behaviours around heavy vehicles.
  • Enhanced school resources through donated equipment and sponsorship.
  • Improved colleague engagement by providing meaningful volunteering opportunities that allow employees to share their skills, passions and experience.
  • Stronger community connections between pupils, teachers and Breedon employees.
  • A sustainable, long-term partnership supporting local education and community wellbeing.

The relationship that we have developed with St Hardulph’s school is equally important to both parties.  The children in our small community have enjoyed opportunities that Breedon have been able to offer and colleagues at Breedon have enjoyed the interaction with the children.  Earlier this year the children came over, unexpectedly, with daffodils and poems they had written to spread acts of kindness. Due to the relationship we have built they felt comfortable to go into meeting rooms, busy offices and hand out the flowers. This gesture had a real impact in our office environment and when posted on internal comms platforms had over 1,200 likes across the business which shows how wide reaching these initiatives can be.
