Product Overview

Improve crack resistance, extend pavement life and reduce maintenance with the Breedon Flex™ range.

Designed to accommodate pavement movement and withstand the stresses of modern traffic, the Breedon Flex™ range combines advanced elastomeric polymer-modified binder technology with proven asphalt performance. The enhanced flexibility helps to reduce the impact of thermal and traffic-induced stresses, supporting longer service life and improved pavement durability.

Breedon Flex™ provides a reliable solution for a wide range of applications, including urban and rural roads, concrete pavement overlays, heavily trafficked junctions and roundabouts. Its enhanced temperature resilience can also support earlier trafficking, helping to minimise disruption during construction and maintenance works.

The Breedon Flex™ range includes solutions tailored to specific pavement challenges. Breedon Flex™ SAMI helps mitigate reflective cracking through a stress-absorbing interlayer, while Breedon Flex+™ delivers enhanced flexibility and durability for the most demanding traffic and environmental conditions.

Why choose Breedon Flex™

Enhanced durability
Breedon Flex™ provides superior resistance to fatigue, cracking, rutting and deformation under heavy traffic and repeated loading.

Highly flexible mix design
With a lower stiffness and superior elasticity compared to standard asphalt concretes, Breedon Flex™ accommodates pavement movement and resists thermal cracking.

Early trafficking to reduce disruption
The high binder softening point provides enhanced temperature resilience and allows earlier opening to traffic.

Improved resistance to water sensitivity
Superior water resistance and bitumen adhesion for long-term durability and performance in wet conditions.

Reduced whole-life costs
Enhanced durability and extended service life help minimise maintenance requirements and lifecycle costs.

Applications

The Breedon Flex™ range is ideal for sites which require increased flexibility, durability and resistance to cracking. Common applications include:

  • Urban and rural road networks
  • Overlaying concrete pavements and cement bound granular materials (CBGM)
  • Bridge decks and structures
  • Heavily trafficked roads and roundabouts

FAQs

The Breedon Flex™ range is produced using an elastomeric polymer-modified binder, giving it greater flexibility than standard asphalt. This enhanced flexibility allows the pavement to accommodate movement and stresses within the underlying layers, rather than transferring them directly to the surface.

In standard asphalt pavements, cracks and defects in lower layers can propagate upwards over time, leading to reflective cracking. Breedon Flex™ is specifically designed to resist this process by flexing with the movement below, helping to prevent cracks from reaching the surface. The result is a more durable pavement with improved resistance to cracking, a longer service life and reduced maintenance requirements.

Yes. The Breedon Flex™ range is well suited to heavily trafficked roads, junctions, roundabouts and other high-stress applications where pavement performance is critical.

Its elastomeric polymer-modified binder enables the asphalt to accommodate small movements within the underlying layers, reducing the risk of cracking and helping the pavement withstand repeated traffic loading. This enhanced flexibility contributes to improved resistance to permanent deformation (rutting) and fatigue cracking, helping to maintain surface integrity for longer.

Yes. The Breedon Flex™ range is suitable for use over both concrete pavements and Cement Bound Granular Material (CGBM), making it an effective solution for pavement strengthening and overlay projects.

Before overlaying, any loose, cracked or deteriorated material should be removed, and all joints repaired and sealed to provide a stable, well-prepared substrate.

Yes. The Breedon Flex™ range can be recycled in the same way as other bitumous materials, enabling it to be reused within future pavement construction and maintenance projects.

No. A Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) is not designed to act as a running surface and does not provide significant load-bearing capability. Its primary function is to absorb stresses and reduce the transmission of cracks from the underlying pavement into the asphalt overlay above.

A SAMI is typically installed as a thin interlayer between pavement layers and must be covered with an asphalt overlay before the road can be opened to traffic. The overlay provides the structural strength, durability and skid resistance required for long-term performance.

The minimum overlay thickness required will depend on factors such as local specifications, traffic loading and the specific SAMI product being used. Please contact the team for guidance and recommendations on suitable overlay thicknesses for your project.

Increasing the thickness of an asphalt overlay can improve structural capacity, but it does not necessarily prevent reflective cracking. Cracks, joints and other defects in the underlying pavement can still propagate through a thicker overlay if the stresses causing them are not effectively managed.

Flexible asphalt solutions, such as the Breedon Flex™ range, and Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayers (SAMI) are specifically designed to accommodate movement and dissipate stresses within the pavement structure. By reducing the transfer of strain from underlying layers to the surface, they help minimise the risk of reflective cracking and improve long-term pavement performance.
