CITB Adopt a School Programme

Breedon Tile builds future talent through CITB’s Adopt-a-School programme in Northern Ireland

Through the CITB Adopt-a-School programme, Breedon Tile in Northern Ireland is helping young people explore careers in construction by connecting students with real workplaces, real people and real opportunities. The programme builds stronger links between industry and education while supporting Breedon’s wider community and social value ambitions

Challenge

Like much of the construction sector, the industry in Northern Ireland faces an ageing workforce, skills shortages and a need to attract more young people into a broader range of careers. Schools and students often have limited direct exposure to the variety of roles available, while employers need practical ways to build early engagement and future talent pipelines.

Solution

Breedon Tile partnered with St Colm’s High School through the CITB Adopt-a-School scheme to give Year 11 students direct insight into the construction and manufacturing environment. The programme included a structured site visit, an introduction to Breedon’s tile operations, a guided factory tour and informal engagement with colleagues. Students also learned about potential work placement opportunities in administration, procurement and dispatch. The wider scheme supports activities such as site visits, talks, work experience and careers events, helping employers and schools build a more sustained relationship rather than a one-off engagement

Impact

The programme has helped students gain first-hand exposure to a live manufacturing environment and a better understanding of careers beyond traditional stereotypes. For the school, it has provided meaningful employer engagement and stronger links between the curriculum and industry.

For Breedon Tile, it has strengthened local relationships, demonstrated visible social value delivery and supported future workforce development. The programme has already included repeat engagement with St Colm’s High School and has since expanded to Laurelhill College, showing potential for wider application across other sites and regions

It is fantastic to see Breedon and Laurelhill Community College engaging through the Adopt A School programme. By opening their doors to students and showcasing the wide range of careers available, Breedon is helping to inspire the next generation into construction. These partnerships play a vital role in promoting careers in construction and strengthening links between industry and education.
