Supporting stronger flood defences

Breedon were contracted by Active Tunnelling, working for Severn Trent Water authority, to supply ready-mix concrete for two new attenuation tanks that were being installed at Grange Lane North, Scunthorpe.

The tanks, measuring 14m deep with a diameter of 20m, and holding 4,400m³ each (the equivalent of two Olympic-sized swimming pools), are part of a local flood prevention scheme. They are designed to collect rainwater during heavy downpours, reducing the risk of surface water flooding on nearby roads and streets.

In total over 1,300m³ of ready-mix concrete was required to complete the project. 907m³ was provided for the base of the attenuation tanks, which was successfully delivered through a joint supply arrangement, with Breedon contributing 471m³. This collaborative effort ensured the pour was completed efficiently and in a single day. An additional 400m³ of concrete was subsequently supplied for ancillary works, bringing the project to completion.

Project Requirements

There were three main requirements to ensure the attenuation tanks provided a long-lasting solution. Firstly, to minimise the risk of cold joints and create a seamless and homogenous structure, the concrete pours for both tanks needed to be completed in a single day.

Timing was also critical with the pours needing to take place on the agreed date to keep the programme of works on track, and avoid any delays to the wider project.

Finally, the concrete mix had to be specially designed to withstand harsh exposure conditions and offer lasting resistance to sulphate and chemical attack.

Our Solution

With a large concrete volume required over a short time frame, close collaboration between Active Tunnelling and the Breedon commercial, technical and distribution teams was critical to successful project delivery. We engaged early in the planning stages to coordinate logistics and ensure a seamless supply of concrete. With our operational scale and flexibility, we were able to meet the demands without interrupting supply to other projects.

Our technical team designed a concrete mix that met the specified exposure conditions to provide long-term performance. We supplied 471m³ of C32/40 DC-4 (380 0.40) S/P CIIIB+SR S3 Pump 20mm.

The concrete was supplied from two nearby plants in Elsham and Grimsby, and in total 14 trucks delivered 64 loads between 6.00am and 5.00pm on the day of the pour. All concrete was offloaded using site-provided pumps, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted operation from start to finish.

Following the successful completion of the attenuation tanks, we were contracted to deliver a further 400m³ of concrete to complete associated ancillary works.

This mix composition offered the required durability, as well as resistance to sulphate and chemical attack. A high GGBS content of 70% provided the additional benefit of increased resistance to thermal cracking, due to its lower heat of hydration, whilst also making the concrete mix lower carbon.

The 1,000t of aggregates and CEMI cement used in the concrete mix were sourced from our Norton Bottoms Quarry and Hope Cement Works, giving us full control over quality and consistency.

Working with Breedon we know we’re going to get quality, reliability and efficiency, and this was demonstrated during this project. Breedon delivered 471m³ in a 12-hour window with seamless communication throughout. Their service exceeded expectations and made a high-volume, time-critical pour feel routine. We look forward to continuing our great working relationship.
