FAQs

Welsh Slate is one of the most durable roofing materials available, with an expected lifespan of 150 years, guaranteed for 100 years. Its strength, low water absorption and resistance to weathering making it suitable for all climates.

Welsh Slate is a 100% natural product with very little processing required from quarry to roof. This makes it one of the most sustainable roofing choices, with a low carbon footprint and long lifecycle.

Welsh Slate is maintenance-free once installed. Unlike man-made roofing materials, it does not fade, warp or deteriorate quickly, ensuring the roof retains its high quality and appearance.

While imported slates can be cheaper, they often lack the consistency, longevity and colourfastness of Welsh Slate. With Welsh Slate, you are investing in superior quality and a proven performance track record.

Non-ferrous fixings should always be used – typically copper nails (preferred) or aluminum nails of a 3.3 gauge. These prevent corrosion over time. The nail should be of sufficient length to penetrate the batten by a minimum of 15mm excluding the point of the nail.

Welsh Slates are generally supplied pre-holed to suit the required headlap for a particular project. Advice to the correct holing gauge can be supplied by our technical department.

Welsh Slate offers RIBA approved CPD seminars nationally. CPD seminars can be virtual or office based. We also offer a RIBA approved tour of the Penrhyn Quarry and factory demonstrating the current slate quarrying and production processes.
