Developing sustainable solutions

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world and traditional concrete production is responsible for around 7 - 8% of global CO₂ emissions.

In modern construction, finding the right balance between performance and sustainability is a challenge, but we believe these goals can go hand in hand.

Our sustainable concrete solutions, including our Breedon Balance range, are designed to reduce carbon impact across the entire lifecycle of your projects.

How we reduce carbon footprint

Lower carbon cementitious alternatives
We use non-clinker-based Secondary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), Silica Fume, Limestone Fines, Calcined Clays, as well as geopolymer concretes. These materials replace a portion of traditional clinker, cutting CO₂ emissions while retaining, or improving, strength and durability.

Non-virgin aggregates
By incorporating non‑virgin aggregates, we can reduce our reliance on newly extracted materials, supporting the long‑term protection of virgin aggregate reserves.

Innovative admixtures 
We’re investing in the latest admixture technology to optimise the performance of our concretes. We use Superplasticisers to reduce water demand while enabling us to lower the carbon footprint of the concrete.

Reduced water usage
We conserve water by capturing rainwater and using a high‑pressure, low‑volume cleaning system that allows us to recycle it back into the manufacturing process.

Locally sourced. Locally delivered. 
With more than 80 quarries and 130 concrete plants across Great Britain, we’re able to prioritise the use of locally sourced materials and minimise transport distances.

Yes, we can provide certificates by mix, site and project. Please speak to your Breedon representative when placing your order and they will be able to assist.

We have a variety of lower carbon concretes that can be designed to meet your specific low carbon needs and specifications. 

We add a range of sustainable materials and technologies to reduce the carbon in a concrete mix. This includes SCM’s to replace a portion of cement, recycled aggregates to help preserve natural resources, and recycled water used in the mixing process. In addition, we use superplasticisers to improve workability while allowing for a reduced cement content.

CEMI is the largest CO2 contributor in concrete.  We specialise in designing concrete mixtures that use alternative materials such as SCM’s and chemical admixtures to reduce the amount of CEMI in the concrete and hence lower the CO2 of the product without compromising the required performance.

In addition, we use recycled aggregates to help preserve natural resources, and recycled water used in the mixing process to ensure the concrete provided has the minimum impact on the environment.
