Standard Concrete Mixes

Designated concrete is a type of concrete defined by BS 8500 in the UK, where the mix proportions, strength class, and performance requirements are predefined for specific applications — usually for use in non-structural or routine structural construction work.

We supply designated concrete mixes for the following applications:

• Gen (General) Mixes - Commonly used for blinding, mass fill or domestic floors without reinforcement
• RC (Reinforced Concrete) Mixes - Used for Slabs, Beams, Columns, Walls, Foundations and general infrastructure that contains steel reinforcement.
• PAV (Pavement) Mixes - For use in external paving where the concrete will be exposed to de-icing salts such as Industrial yards and Concrete roads.
• FND (Foundation) Mixes - Concrete used in foundations within chemically aggressive ground. Protects foundations from chemical attack in the soil.

Standard Prescribed Concrete mixes are where the mix proportions are prescribed and comply with a British Standard table, rather than being based on test data or mix design.

They are suitable for general construction where the exact mix is not critical, and the concrete is not reinforced or used in structural elements.

Nominal concrete mixes are produced where proportions of cement, sand, and aggregates are fixed based on past experience or established guidelines, rather than being calculated based on performance like strength or durability

Used in informal or small-scale construction, with some mix examples as follows:

• 1:2:4 - Standard Nominal Mix
• 1:3:6 - Non structural use
• 1:4:8 - Lean concrete / Blinding

A prescribed concrete mix is a type of concrete where the exact mix proportions (cement, water, aggregates, admixtures) are specified in advance, rather than being designed to meet a specific performance requirement (like strength or durability)
