Product Overview & Why Use Breedon Gravicrete Concrete

Our Breedon Gravicrete range provides specialised low-density and high-density concrete mixes designed for a wide range of structural applications, from weight-sensitive builds to radiation shielding and ballast.

Our low-density concrete is formulated using lightweight aggregates such as expanded clay or pumice materials. Breedon Gravicrete Lightweight delivers a reduced weight mix, without compromising on essential strength. It is ideal for load-sensitive structures.

Our high-density concrete uses heavy weight aggregates such as barytes, magnetite, or steel punchings to provide increased mass per unit volume making it suitable for radiation shielding, ballast, and vibration dampening.

Applications

  • Breedon Gravicrete Lightweight is suitable for a wide range of applications where a lower density solution is required.
  • Breedon Gravicrete Heavyweight is suitable for a wide range of applications where a higher density solution is required.

FAQs

Breedon Gravicrete Lightweight Concrete:

Lightweight structural concrete significantly reduces the dead load on buildings and structures. This is especially useful in high-rise buildings, bridges, and precast elements where weight savings can lower foundation and structural support requirements.

No. Despite being lighter, it is designed to meet structural strength requirements. It provides a good balance of reduced weight and adequate load-bearing capacity for many construction applications.

Due to its porous aggregate (like expanded clay), Breedon Gravicrete Lightweight concrete offers better thermal insulation than normal concrete. This can improve energy efficiency in buildings and reduce heating and cooling costs.

Breedon Gravicrete Heavyweight Concrete:

Heavyweight concrete has a much higher density (typically over 3,200 kg/m³) due to the use of heavy aggregates like barite or magnetite. It’s used when additional mass is needed for radiation shielding, ballast, or vibration damping.

It is commonly used in nuclear power plants, medical radiation therapy rooms, laboratories, and military structures where radiation shielding is essential. It’s also used for counterweights in bridges, cranes, and offshore structures.

Heavyweight concrete absorbs and attenuates radiation more effectively than normal concrete, protecting people and equipment by reducing exposure to harmful gamma rays and neutrons in nuclear or medical facilities.
