Engineering and Maintenance

Mechanical engineering apprentice

Do you enjoy fixing things and figuring out how machines work? As a mechanical engineering apprentice, you’ll help keep the machinery in our quarries, asphalt and concrete plants, and surfacing sites running safely and efficiently. You’ll get hands-on experience maintaining pumps, conveyors, mixers, and other plant machinery, diagnosing faults, and supporting engineers in real-world industrial environments. Along the way, you’ll earn a nationally recognised qualification and develop problem-solving, teamwork, and technical skills. This apprenticeship could lead to a long-term career as a mechanical engineer, maintenance specialist, or site technician, giving you the chance to progress across our operations in the UK and Ireland.

Multi-skilled engineering apprentice

Do you enjoy working with both mechanical and electrical systems? Our multi-skilled engineering apprenticeship lets you gain experience across both disciplines, maintaining plant machinery, electrical systems, and automated equipment. You’ll work on real machines, use diagnostic tools, carry out repairs, and support engineers on-site. You’ll develop hands-on technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork, while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. This apprenticeship prepares you for a career as a multi-skilled engineer, plant technician, or senior site engineer.

Electrical engineering apprentice

Do you like working with technology and solving problems? As an electrical engineering apprentice, you’ll maintain and improve the electrical systems that power our plants and machinery. You’ll gain hands-on experience installing, testing, and fault-finding on electrical equipment such as motors, control panels, and automated systems. Alongside a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll develop analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a future career in electrical engineering or technical management across the construction materials industry.

HGV and plant technician apprentice

Do you love vehicles and machinery? As a HGV and plant technician apprentice, you’ll maintain HGVs, loaders, excavators, and other heavy plant equipment across our quarries, asphalt and concrete plants, and surfacing sites. You’ll gain hands-on experience inspecting vehicles, diagnosing faults, performing maintenance, and using specialist tools. Alongside earning a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll develop engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Many apprentices progress into senior technician roles, fleet management, or plant engineering positions.

Our apprentices work on highways and infrastructure schemes, gaining hands-on experience while developing the skills needed for a long-term career in construction and civil engineering.

Engineering and Infrastructure

Civil engineering apprentice – surfacing

Do you enjoy seeing the results of your work outdoors? As a civil engineering apprentice, you’ll help plan, prepare, and lay roads, pavements, and other surfaces. You’ll operate specialist machinery such as pavers, rollers, and screed machines, carry out quality checks, and learn construction techniques from experienced engineers. You’ll develop hands-on skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities while earning a nationally recognised qualification. This apprenticeship could lead to a career as a civil engineer, site supervisor, or surfacing specialist.

Our apprentices help produce essential materials across our quarries and plants, gaining practical experience while developing skills for a career in operational and production roles. 

Operations and production

Quarry plant operative apprentice

Do you enjoy working outdoors and being active? As a quarry and cement plant operative apprentice, you’ll help extract and process materials that build roads and communities. You’ll operate machinery such as loaders, crushers, and conveyors, carry out safety and quality checks, and support production processes. Alongside a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll develop practical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Many apprentices progress into senior operative roles, plant supervisor positions, or technical specialist roles.

Ready-mix concrete operative apprentice

Do you like seeing the results of your work immediately? As a ready-mix concrete operative apprentice, you’ll prepare, mix, and deliver concrete to construction sites across the UK and Ireland. You’ll gain hands-on experience operating mixing plant, carrying out quality checks, and supporting production. Alongside earning a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll develop practical, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. This apprenticeship prepares you for a long-term career in plant operations, production, or site supervision.

Road surfacing operative apprentice

Do you enjoy working outdoors and being active? As a road surfacing operative apprentice, you’ll operate machinery like pavers, rollers, and screed machines, lay asphalt, and help create roads and surfaces used every day. You’ll gain hands-on experience, develop practical construction and teamwork skills, and earn a nationally recognised qualification. Many apprentices progress into senior operative roles, site supervision, or specialist surfacing positions.

Our apprentices support testing and analysis across laboratories and sites, developing scientific and analytical skills that help maintain industry standards. 

Technical Science – Quality and Testing

Material laboratory technician apprentice

Do you enjoy science and experiments? As a material laboratory technician apprentice, you’ll test aggregates, cement, asphalt, and concrete to ensure every product meets strict quality standards. You’ll gain hands-on experience using sieves, compression machines, moisture analysers, and other lab equipment, while learning from experienced technicians. Alongside a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll develop analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Many apprentices progress into senior lab roles, quality specialists, or technical management positions.

Our apprentices support teams and customers across the business, building communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills in a professional environment. 

Customer Service and Business Support

Customer service apprentice

Do you enjoy helping people and solving problems? As a customer service apprentice, you’ll support customers and colleagues, process orders, and ensure projects run smoothly. You’ll gain hands-on experience with customer systems, communication, and problem-solving, while earning a nationally recognised qualification. This apprenticeship can lead to roles as customer service coordinators, office supervisors, or specialist support roles across the business.

Business administration apprentice

Do you enjoy organising tasks and helping teams work efficiently? As a business administration apprentice, you’ll support office teams, manage schedules, assist projects, and help processes run smoothly. You’ll gain hands-on experience with systems, reporting, and internal communications, while earning a nationally recognised qualification. Many apprentices progress into roles such as office coordinators, project administrators, or business support managers.

Business support apprenticeships (Group functions)

Do you like helping teams work efficiently across a business? As a business support apprentice, you’ll support departments such as finance, HR, marketing, and operations. You’ll gain hands-on experience with administration, reporting, and internal projects, while earning a nationally recognised qualification. Many apprentices progress into office coordinator, project support, or management roles, building a career across multiple functions in the business.
