Belfast International Airport Ltd is the largest airport in Northern Ireland and the second largest airport on the island of Ireland. The main runway 07-25 has a runway length of 2,700 metres running east to west, providing sufficient capability to handle most types of aircraft including long haul services. The secondary runway 17-35 has a runway length of 1,950 metres running north to south and also serves MOD base requirements at RAF Aldergrove.

Breedon was appointed by Belfast International Airport Ltd to deliver the runway 07/25 pavement rehabilitation contract. The project delivery programme was accelerated by four weeks to accommodate the G8 summit visit to Lough Erne, Co Fermanagh in early June 2013.

The project involved cold milling 125,000m2 of existing surface (2,700m long x 45m wide), laying 30,000 tonnes of Marshall Asphalt Regulating, binder course and surface course, grooving the new surface and provision of temporary and permanent runway markings. In addition to the main works, the project also involved the construction of a new 170m long floodlit Fire Access Road from runway 07/25 to the fire station; the construction of a new fillet at runway 17/35 intersection, the installation of 270 Nr F900 Chamber covers to existing chambers located in the hard shoulder, the construction of 10nr new F900 chambers, and the replacement of the existing airfield ground lighting systems and apparatus.
