Stone mastic asphalt

Stone mastic asphalt (SMA) can be used in the Surface and Binder layers of a pavement. The product is a blend of a high proportion of single size coarse aggregate, plus fine aggregate, filler and binder.

When combined the end product is a gap graded mixture that derives strength from the coarse aggregate skeleton that is filled with the mortar of fine aggregate, filler and binder.

Benefits & key features

  • SMA is manufactured in accordance with EN 13108-5.
  • SMA manufactured with Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) provides a durable, long lasting material even in high stress areas.
  • SMA manufactured with paving grade binder and cellulose fibres is suitable in lower stress areas.
  • SMA provides a smooth appearance as the texture produced by SMA is negative i.e. below the surface.
  • As well as being a highly durable material, SMA produces exceptional resistance to permanent deformation (wheel track rutting) due to the aggregate skeleton and polymer modified binder used in the design.
  • The negative texture of SMA reduces tyre noise so is beneficial in sound reduction when compared with other Surface course materials.
  • SMA can be used virtually anywhere, on all road types including high stress roundabouts, commercial and residential areas. It is also very popular for household driveways due to its high resistance to scuffing from power steering.
