Low Energy Bound Mixtures (LEBM)

Low Energy Bound Mixtures (LEBM) can be used in the Base and Binder layers of a pavement. The product is a blend of different coarse aggregate sizes, fine aggregate, cement and foamed binder.

When combined the end product is generally a dense, continuously graded mixture that derives strength from the aggregate interlock and hydraulic reaction with the cement.

LEBM is an environmentally beneficial product as it is made cold with a variety of materials including recycled products such as crushed concrete and reclaimed asphalt.

Benefits & Key Features

  • LEBM handles like a granular material and remains workable until compaction and moisture migration is complete, after which it becomes harder and reaches a strength comparable with hot mix bituminous materials.
  • LEBM is placed by normal hotmix paving and compaction equipment.

Sustainable benefits

  • LEBM utilises a wide range of marginal and recycled materials, thus conserving local aggregate resources.
  • The production plant is energy-efficient, quiet and low emission, the plant is mobile and hence can travel to the source of the constituents so reducing truck movements. with no chemicals added to the process.
  • LEBM is mixed and laid cold, allowing greater on-site flexibility, whilst the materials can be stockpiled for up to four weeks in advance of laying.
  • Although LEBM handles like a granular material, its cured stiffness enables the overall pavement thickness to be reduced compared with granular alternatives.
  • LEBM uses proven technology approved by TII and local authorities for many years.
