Hot rolled asphalt EN13108-4

Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) is predominantly used as a Surface course but some types of HRA can be used as a Binder layer for industrial or residential applications. The product is a blend of a single size of coarse aggregate, a high proportion of fine aggregate, plus filler and binder. When combined the end product is a dense, gap graded mixture that derives strength from the fine aggregate, filler and binder.

Surface macrotexture and skid resistance on the high speed road network is achieved by rolling Coated Chippings into the surface during installation.

Benefits & key features

  • HRA is manufactured in accordance with EN 13108-4.
  • Because of the rich mortar of fine aggregate, filler and binder in HRA the material is very durable and water resistant. The product will normally have a long life cycle ranging from 15 to 25 years.
  • HRA mixtures can be manufactured with a range of coarse aggregate contents according to the end use:
    • 30 or 35% coarse aggregate mixtures used as a Surface course layer for high speed roads - in conjunction with Coated chippings that are rolled into the surface to provide a positive macrotexture
    • 55% coarse aggregate mixtures used as a Surface course layer for low speed roads
    • 0% coarse aggregate mixtures used as protection to bridge deck waterproofing
